After looking at the photos in the remastered version of Time Out,
recording engineer Will Miho posted the following in rec.audio. pro.
It is reprinted here with his kind permission.
"Time Out" was recorded at the 30th Street Columbia Studios and was
engineered by Fred Plaut. It was produced by Teo Macero, who also produced
many classic Miles Davis albums, among others. On the pictures from the
recording date I can just about make out a Neumann M49 or M50 where Paul
Desmond would have been standing with his sax, and a U87 or U69 overhead on
Joe Morello's drum kit (reinforcing somewhat my belief that the
"classic" jazz sound is largely the fat sound of Neumann mikes given a lot
of air.) Dave's piano also appears to have an M49/M50 angled down into it,
with the lid at full stick position. They appear to have recorded in a
semicircle, with Paul Desmond in the center, facing Dave Brubeck on the
right. Next left to Dave would be Eugene Wright's bass (with a gobo in
front of the bass on its side to shield the mike) and next left to the bass
Joe Morello's drums.
