Time Out
Columbia CL 1397 - 6, 7 & 8/59 - N.Y.C.
NOTE: This is the big one -- the first of the "time signature" LPs, and the first recording/release of "Take Five". There's lots of debate over who contributed what to the tune "Take Five". It appears that Desmond, Joe Morello, and Brubeck all had something to do with it, but Desmond got the nod for writing the tune. It was released as a single (COL 31769), and went to the top of the charts.
Desmond's last official recording of it is from March 10/76 on the DBQ 25th Anniversary Reunion (A&M CD 0806). There are also a couple of later bootleg recordings: one of the Paul Desmond Quartet at the Edmonton Jazz Festival, April 14/76 on which he plays "Take Five" with Ed Bickert (guitar), Don Thompson (bass), and Jerry Fuller (drums), and a DBQ 25th Reunion Tour concert recording from August 28/76 at the Eastman Theater in Rochester, N.Y.

Take Five / Blue Rondo à la Turk
NOTE: This is the hit single version of Take Five, with Blue Rondo à la Turk on the "B" side. It was the first jazz "million-seller". Brubeck told me in 1991 that the DBQ was in England when the single was released unbeknownst to him. He claimed the single was actually an edited version of an alternate take recorded on the same day, July 1, 1959. Fischer lists an alternate take being released on COL 4-41479, but he lists the take released on Time Out as the one released as a single. Whatever the truth, it became Brubeck's signature tune, and a jazz anthem of sorts, played by budding saxophonists around the world.
For more information see Time Out.

NOTE: IMHO this is one of the best, if not the best, Paul Desmond recording
that you can get. His playing, especially on "I Get a Kick Out of You", is superb.
This was his first LP with Jim Hall, and it doesn't get any better than this.
All of these tracks were also released on the Mosaic collection The
Complete Recordings of the Paul Desmond Quartet with Jim Hall (MD4-120),
but that 4-CD set has been out-of-print for a couple of years now. So if you
see this, grab it.
The original title, "First Place Again", apparently referred
to Desmond's consistent winning of the Down Beat Reader's Poll.

Jazz Allstars Album Vol. 3
Desmond appeared on two tracks, one under his own name -- "Susie", and the
other with the DBQ -- "Golden Horn". "Susie" was recorded during the Warner
Bros. sessions with Jim Hall for First Place Again -- September 5, 6
& 7, 1959. According to Mosaic Records, the 3-track stereo master and even
the mono master of the tune is missing. For the Mosaic collection, The Complete
Recordings of the Paul Desmond Quartet with Jim Hall, Mosaic acquired a
clean copy of the original Playboy LP and made a disc transfer.
